The Deacon
Who Is He? What Does He Do? How Do I Become One?
Michele Bennardo/Lorenzo Bortolin/Benito Cutell

From the fifth century the permanent diaconate (widespread in the early Christian communities) was diminished until it practically disappeared, except for rare comebacks, as in the case of St. Francis of Assisi. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) gave it new impetus; and it's currently a "vocation" in constant growth.

This volume&mdashthe work of three permanent deacons of the Dioceses of Turin and Susa&mdashshows in an instructional, yet well documented way, the biblical and patristic foundations of the diaconate. Through a brief history that starts with its origins and arrives at the most recent Vatican instructions and norms, it deals extensively with who deacons are, what they do, and covers the proper formation to become one.

The appendix presents the profiles of more than 40 deacons that the Church has declared saints.
