Singing with Mary and the Saints

Gregorian Chant Schola of Saint John's Abbey and University

In hymns, antiphons, psalms, and responsories, the chant schola sings of John the Baptist who announced Jesus' coming, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Joseph her spouse, the apostles Peter and Paul, the evangelists Matthew and Luke, and Saints Benedict, Scholastica, Hildegard, Dominic, and Francis. The Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated with great love by the Catholic faithful, and she and the saints are honored for their virtue and prayed to for assistance in daily life. These chants venerate and call upon Mary and the saints, with selections drawn from Mass and Liturgy of the Hours (Office) from the entire liturgical year, concluding with the feast of All Saints. The chant is predominantly in Latin, but with a bit of English chant in some cases. Vocal harmony enhances the ancient medieval chants in some cases.Selection are:Ave, Maria (Hail Mary), AnnunciationEcce, virgo (Behold a Virgin), AnnunciationHymnis angelicis (With Angelic Hymns), St. ScholasticaLustus germinabit (The Just Will Blossom), St. JosephHodie Sanctus Benedictus (Today St. Benedict), St. BenedictTu, puer (You, O child), St. John the BaptistTu es pastor (You Are the Shepherd), Ss. Away in a Manger

"Carols of Christmas, Evening Prayer of Christmas: Music of Richard Hillert"

The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's-in-the-Loop Church, Chicago; J. Michael Thompson, Director; and The Grace Lutheran School Centenial Choir, River Forest, Illinois; John Folkening, Director

Away in a Manger provides an opportunity for the assembly to experience the Christmas Eve service in a special way. Joining the choir and the instrumentalists in their favorite seasonal carols, the voices of adults alternate with those of children singing and rejoicing in the message of "Emmanuel," "God-with-us." Away in a Manger follows each aspect of the Christmas Eve service, beginning with the Evening Prayer of Christmas, greeting Christ as the "joyous light of glory." The service continues with the evening psalm, and then the assembly listens to the Christmas Story from the Gospel according to Luke proclaimed by the choirs. Children carry most of the narration from the Gospel as adults join in with stanzas of Christmas hymns loved by many generations. The entire story of the Nativity is given, with the angels, shepherds, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus all taking their parts. Responding to the Good News of the Christmas gospel (Luke 2:1-20), the assembly sings the Magnificat, the song of praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as recorded in Luke's Gospel. The Litany, the Prayer for Peace, and the Lord's Prayer lead to the quiet close of Evening Prayer. The service concludes with the familiar carol Joy to the World. Includes the Service of Light Psalm 141 The Christmas Story Magnificat The Litany and Prayer for Peace The Lord's Prayer Benedicamus O Come, All Ye Faithful   Away in a Manger The First Noel What Child Is This? Angels We Have Heard on High   O Little Town of Bethlehem Joy to the World. Also available for download on Amazon and iTunes. J. Michael Thompson is the director of music ministry at St. Peter's Church, where he is the founder and director of the Schola Cantorum. He has been a pastoral musician and liturgist for twenty years, as well as a composer, author, and a noted promoter of the Liturgy of the Hours and Gregorian chant in contemporary parish situations.

How Awesome This Place

Morning and Evening Prayer for the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Church

Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's-in-the-Loop Church, Chicago; J. Michael Thompson, Director

While the Liturgy of the Hours is being newly discovered by lay Christians, its wealth as sung prayer is being appreciated by musicians. A response to many requests for a "take-home" version of Vespers, How Awesome This Place offers a complete, sung celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. Demonstrating the ways that chant can be effectively used in parochial celebrations in the 1990s, How Awesome This Place provides a model for the parochial celebration of Morning and Evening Prayer, using the Office for the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Church as an example. It shows how every church can observe its dedication anniversary as a solemnity by celebrating Morning and Evening Prayer in English with Gregorian chant. The motet Surely the Lord Is in this Place   precedes Morning Prayer selections: Introduction Invitatory Antiphon and Psalm 100 Office Hymn: Christ Is Made the Sure Foundation First Psalm (46) Old Testament Canticle: Song of the Three Young Men Second Psalm (147) Reading Responsory Gospel Canticle: Benedictus Intercessions The Lord's Prayer   Concluding Prayer Conclusion A motet for lamp lighting precedes selections for Evening Prayer: Lucernarium Introduction Office Hymn: Blessed City, Heavenly Salem First Psalm (122) Second Psalm New Testament Canticle: Revelations Hymn Reading Prolix Responsory: Domus iste Gospel Canticle: Magnificat Intercessions The Lord's Prayer Concluding Prayer Blessing and Dismissal

In Honor of St. Francis

Music for the Little Poor Man of Assisi

The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's-in-the-Loop Church, Chicago; J. Michael Thompson, Director

With this recording the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's-in-the-Loop, founded as the professional liturgical choir of a Franciscan "shrine church" in downtown Chicago, pays homage to the Poor Man of Assisi who was a friend to the poor and the sick, lived a life of simplicity, and loved nature. The pieces include settings of texts written by St. Francis, about him, or on subjects dear to his heart. In Honor of St. Francis traces choral music from the twelfth century through the twentieth and is a true "homage" to St. Francis of Assisi and a celebration of the choral art. The concert Schola is joined by a chamber orchestra for this recording. Selections are: Lauda for St. Francis Est Dies Trophei Beatus Franciscus Song of the Sun Totus amor es, Francisce This Way Was Your Life Four Little Prayers of Saint Francis of Assisi Angels and Ministers, Spirits of Grace   The Place of the Blest All Creatures of Our God and King In Honor of St. Francis is a live recording of the tenth anniversary concert performance of the Schola on the solemnity of St. Francis of Assisi. J. Michael Thompson is the founder and director of the Schola Cantorum. He has been a pastoral musician and liturgist for twenty years, as well as a composer, author, and a noted promoter of the Liturgy of the Hours and Gregorian chant in contemporary parish situations. The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's-in-the-Loop, Chicago, Illinois, sang for the first time on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul in 1988 at Solemn Evening Prayer. Since that first service, the women and men of the Schola have sung for Solemn Eucharists, Solemn Evening Prayer, Communal Penance Services, weddings, priest's first Masses, simple and solemn professions, ordinations to the diaconate and priesthood, and various other services at St. Peter's-in-the-Loop. Made up of professionally trained musicians the Schola is dedicated to the principles enshrined in the documents of the Second Vatican Council as elaborated by the Bishops' Commission on the Liturgy—to lead the faithful in the singing of the Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Hours, to preserve the treasury of sacred music, and to enlarge the repertory of choral music. The Schola has been invited by parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago to bring its skills in leading musical worship to them. The Schola is a frequent guest of Ukrainian Catholic and Byzantine Catholic parishes in Chicago and in Munster, Indiana, singing in English, Church Slavonic, and in Ukrainian. Over the last ten years the Schola has also played a large part in the ecumenical and inter-religious work of the Archdiocese and has sung at a variety of inter-faith services. The Schola was featured as one of "Chicago's Sacred Treasures" on a television documentary. Several national organizations have featured the Schola, either in leading worship or in giving concerts. The Schola Cantorum has performed twenty-five other collections produced by The Liturgical Press: Light from the East: Carols from Central and Eastern Europe II; Have Mercy on Me, O God: The Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete; Music for the Year of Matthew: Hymns, Chant, and Anthems for Ordinary Time, Cycle A; Music for Lent II; Music for Easter II; Music for the Twelve Days of Christmas; Chant and Spirituality; Music for Advent II: Hymns, Chant, and Anthems for the Four Weeks Before Christmas; How Awesome This Place: Morning and Evening Prayer for the Anniversary of the Dedication of a Church; Praise to the Lord: Great Hymns of the Church; Sing the God of Ultimate Justice: Music for the End Time; Music for the Paschal Triduum; Rejoice, Unwedded Bride; Music for the November Feasts: Hymns, Chant, and Anthems for All Saints, All Souls, Thanksgiving, and Christ the King; Away in a Manger: Carols of Christmas, Evening Prayer of Christmas; Christmas Through Candlemas: Music for the Feasts of Light II; There Is Great Rejoicing: Carols of Central and Eastern Europe; This is the Feast: Music of Richard Hillert; In Honor of St. Patrick: Chant for His Feast; O Bread of Life: Hymns, Chant, and Anthems for Use at the Holy Eucharist; Music for the Feasts of Light; Music for Advent; Music for Lent; Music for Easter; and A Service of Compline. The Easter Procession

Encounters with the Risen Christ

Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle; J. Michael Thompson, Director; James E. Clemens, Composer

The paschal season is the most important of the entire Year of Grace but also the one that contains the least amount of music. The Easter Procession provides a juxtaposition of ancient chant and new compositions by James E. Clemens. This "Way of the Cross for the Easter Season," provides music of great textual integrity, permitting the Church to sing of the encounters with the Risen Christ. All of the pieces are eminently useful throughout the three-year Lectionary in the Easter season. The Clemens compositions are especially useful as offertory hymns. Selections are Station 1: Resplendent With Virtues; Station 2: They Who Were With Mary; Station 3: Behold the End of Night; Station 4: When Mary Saw Two Angels; Station 5: Christ, Our Way and Our Life; Station Six: Since You Are the True Peace; Station Seven: Though The Doors Were Locked, O Lord; and Station 8: After Your Descent Into Hades. J. Michael Thompson is professor of ecclesiastical chant at the Bynzantine Catholic Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; director of the Metropolitan Cantor Institute of the Archeparchy of Pittsburgh; cantor and director of music at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cathedral, Munhall, Pennsylvania; and the director of the Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle, Chicago, Illinois. Also available for download on Amazon and iTunes. The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter the Apostle, Chicago, has recorded more than twenty-seven other collections produced by Liturgical Press. James E. Clemens is a composer residing in Downers Grove, Illinois.
