From the earliest proclamation of the Gospel to the present, Benedictine theologian Ghislain Lafont traces the development of the Christian faith. In A Theological Journey, now available in this superb translation by John Burkhard, OFM Conv., Lafont explores key doctrines of the faith as they developed in answer to the needs and questions of people in each age. He then engages the questions and risks of today’s world, inviting us to consider our place as Christians in history and in an increasingly globalized world. In the final analysis, Lafont’s theological journey aims at inspiring us to hope in the midst of a world marked by conflict, pain, and suffering.

Ghislain Lafont, OSB, is a monk of the Abbey of La Pierre-qui-vire, France. He currently lives in Rome, assisting the Prior General of the Subiaco Congregation and acting as liaison with the Holy See. Lafont has taught theology in his monastic community as well as at the Athenaeum San Anselmo and the Gregorian University, both in Rome.

John J. Burkhard, OFM Conv., is Professor of Systematic Theology at Washington Theological Union in Washington, D.C. He is the author of Apostolicity Then and Now (Liturgical Press, 2004) and the translator of Ghislain Lafont’s Imagining the Catholic Church (Liturgical Press, 2000.

There is much in this short book that rewards reading and re-reading. My hope is that the publication of A Theological Journey will stimulate American theologians to engage with this challenging and too-little-known European thinker.

Lafont's theological journey leads to hope in an evolving and emerging world. This is a splendid book that should be widely read and discussed.
