Aelred of Rievaulx, the saintly abbot, tells here of saintly forebears and wonderous events in the North of England. An exile and son of exiles, Aelred was well aware of the conflicts and contradictions of human life in exile from the true homeland. He became the great cistercian teacher of the Incarnation, the spiritual guide of fallen humans to the god who had become a man. He wrote of and for flawed and foolish men and women on their journey to the heavenly Jerusalem; his pilgrims are cloistered and uncloistered, men and women: kings and queens, monks and nuns, saints on horseback and workers in purple and lepers and robbers and priests. Through his eyes, we see the saint who evangelized Scotland (The Life of Ninian, written probably 1155-1160), and the saints of the church of Aelred's family home (The Book of the Saints of the Church of Hexham and Their Miracles, ?1154-1155), and we learn of A Certain Wonderful Miracle (1158-1165).

Reviews

The Lives of the Northern Saints is recommended to those interested in the works of St. Aelred. It should also be of interest to those interested in early medieval northern English Church history and hagiography.
American Benedictine Review

. . . these texts are not so much early medieval hagiographies as records documenting the daily concerns and troubles of the early medieval laity and the popular piety which suffused their worldview. . . . Not only would this volume be of interest to historians but it would make a great discussion piece in an undergraduate or graduate course.
The Medieval Review

Those who are familiar with the major works of Aelred of Rievaulx will find this collection of three of his historical works not only interesting, but absolutely fascinating. . . . This edition of Aelred's works offers the twenty-first century reader an opportunity to enter another time and another vision. In so doing, the reader finds new insights, a new vision for life today. Aelred provides us with a captivating read which challenges the reader. This edition of three of Aelred's historical works is something lay people as well as scholars will find invaluable. The translator, editor, and publisher have done a great service to today's Christian community in making these works available.
