American Benedictines in Peking commemorates the centennial of the Benedictine foundation of the first Catholic university in China.

In the hundred years since its foundation, Fu Jen University has been marked by significant historical events, including its move from Beijing, China to Taipei, Taiwan, and introducing the rich Benedictine tradition of prayer and scholarship to China. In American Benedictines in Peking, educational and religious leaders from China, Taiwan, the United States, and the Vatican, highlight the distinguished history and mission of Fu Jen University to commemorate the centennial of the Benedictine foundation of the “Catholic University of Peking.”

American Benedictines in Peking contains the proceedings of an academic conference “One Hundred Years of Faith, Education, and Service” held at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, in April 2025, to observe the significance of the establishment of Fu Jen University as the oldest and largest Catholic university in the Chinese-speaking world.

American Benedictines in Peking features striking black-and-white photographs marking the legacy of Fu Jen’s founding and the flourishing institution that it remains one hundred years later. Among the compelling contents of the book is a letter directed to the gathering at Saint Vincent from Pope Francis, sharing his expressed hope that the commemoration “will serve to inspire, amid the challenges of today’s world, a renewed commitment to the Benedictine vocation to the pursuit of holiness, the witness of fraternal charity, and the spread of the saving truth of the Gospel.”

Jerome Oetgen, a retired United States diplomat and historian, was educated from an early age by the Benedictines. He holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and is the author of several books about the American Benedictines, including An American Abbot: Boniface Wimmer, O.S.B., 1809–1887; Mission to America: A History of Saint Vincent Archabbey, the First Benedictine Monastery in the United States; and Schools for the Lord’s Service: A History of the American-Cassinese Congregation of Benedictine Monasteries 1855–2023, published by Liturgical Press.

Reviews

“The foundation of Fu Jen in Beijing makes us proud to this day. It combines Benedictine virtues—love of scholarship and beauty—a profound sense of mission and an American pioneer spirit. Its later history holds lessons about the limits of what a single monastery can achieve. And yet, not only the memory but also the institution live on— succisa virescit once again. I am grateful that Jerome Oetgen, the renowned Benedictine historian, is now sharing this moving Benedictine endeavor with a wider public.”
Abbot Primate Jeremias Schröeder, OSB, Sant’Anselmo (Rome)

“Chronicling the daunting challenges St. Vincent Archabbey in America overcame in establishing Fu Jen University, the first and largest Catholic university in China, this book is an inspiring read for those interested in Catholic missionary work, education, and cross-cultural exchanges.”
Cecile Chu-Chin Sun, professor emerita, University of Pittsburgh

"Fu Jen Catholic University is the oldest and largest Catholic university in the Chinese-speaking world. On the auspicious occasion of its centennial, this richly researched volume recounts the legendary story of Fu Jen’s founding, its relocation from mainland China to Taiwan, and its growth into a comprehensive, multidisciplinary institution. The book stands as compelling testimony to the vision and contributions of the Holy See’s Congregation for Catholic Education, as well as to the enduring power of dedication to faith, education, and service."
David Der-wei Wang, Harvard University

“These collected papers provide a history that has relevance today. The story of Fu Jen University, the first Catholic University in China, takes the reader from the 1920s and its founding, through the turmoil of the Great Depression, World War II, and a Cold War. The continued existence of Fu Jen at Taipei in Taiwan calls the reader to reflect upon the distinctive role of the Catholic Church over the past century in forging a dialogue with Chinese culture in the face of a succession of historical challenges.”
Abbot Joel Rippinger, OSB, Marmion Abbey, Aurora, Illinois

“This succinct volume nimbly gathers institutional and biographical information on the early experiences of the U.S. Benedictines in Republican China. Its lucid essays—several based on unique archival materials—illuminate both Chinese and American actors, monks, and sisters, highlighting a crucial moment in the history of Catholic higher education in China and of Sino-American relations.”
Eugenio Menegon, associate professor of history, Boston University, author of Ancestors, Virgins and Friars: Christianity as a Local Religion in Late Imperial China

American Benedictines in Peking celebrates not only an anniversary but also bears witness to the unique adaptability of American Benedictine men and women. Having adapted the European model of Benedictinism in North America in the last half of the nineteenth century, American Benedictines responded to the call of Pope Pius XI, whose focus had shifted from European-led missionary activity to east Asian countries in the early twentieth century. The chapters of this book by multiple authors who spoke on the occasion of the centennial celebration of the American Benedictine foundation of Fu Jen Catholic University in Peking (today’s Beijing, later moved to Taiwan), are a significant contribution to American Catholic history and its missionary activity abroad.”
Ephrem (Rita) Hollermann, OSB, Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minnesota, retired professor emerita of historical theology at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University
